Do you remember back in 2008 having an email address felt really cool?

Well, it may not be for everyone but for me back then having a personal email address was like getting a big achievement.

Emails have been there for a long time and email is a very important part of the internet. Back then not everyone had an email address but today it has become a necessity to have an email address to use the internet. Today people not only have one but multiple email addresses.

Let’s go back a little and look at the history of email:

The very first email was created at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in 1965 in a program which was known as MAILBOX.

In 1969, the US department of defence created ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) through which on October 29th the very first email was sent among computers on the ARPANET.

In 1971, Ray Tomlinson who is also known as the father of email introduced email which we use today. He proposed the idea of using ‘@’ in an email address which would help us to send an email to anyone around the world. This was a very major contribution to the internet world and began the era of emails. Still today email’s are the most used source of communication around the world.

What is email marketing?

The term already explains this which is marketing being done through emails is known as email marketing. Email Marketing is one of the most powerful ways of marketing in this digital marketing era.

This is because emails have been the easiest communication medium over the internet. Whether it is for personal use or business, emails are a great way to communicate. It is also called direct marketing because you directly communicate with an individual.

Generally, when marketing was done it was through banners, posters, Tv Ads, Newspaper Ads, etc. It was known as Traditional Marketing. Now, these methods are not effective enough. When people shifted to Digital Marketing, they saw that emails had huge potential when it comes to marketing a product or service.

Suppose you have a departmental store and you put up a hoarding that there is a 50% sale. There is a very high chance that 40% to 50% of your customers won’t get to know about the sale. Only those who will see the hoarding will get to know about it. But if you collect emails of all the customers that visit your store, you could send an email to them whenever there is an offer or discount. Here you will be able to send your message to each individual directly.

This increases your profits as well as increases brand awareness. Also, email marketing gives the highest ROI (Return on investment). If you invest ₹1 you get ₹4 back. Now don’t think this is small, see this in the bigger picture. The more huge the amount the higher returns you get.

Why do you need email marketing?

As I mentioned above if your business is operating online then you must adapt to email marketing. Email marketing helps build a relationship with your audience if you are a creator and if you are a business owner it helps build a relationship with your customer.

In the end, all of us are humans. When we want people to remember us we need to build a proper relationship with them.

Earlier there were few creators in different categories and they used to create content on different platforms and people used to watch. Now there are more creators than viewers. So, to maintain your personal brand on the internet you need to build your own platform. Now don’t get worried, I am not telling you to build another YouTube or Instagram. I am talking about creating your own email list.

Every creator who creates content on the platform wishes to convert it into a business in the future. Suppose you are running a YouTube channel and it has a good amount of subscribers let’s say 100k subs. Now for some reason, your channel gets deleted or something happens, you are left with no source to connect with your audience. Of course, there are social media but not all of your subscribers on YouTube follow you on social media.

You might not be able to upload videos and people may forget you. To overcome this rather than relying on YouTube what you can do is ask your subscribers to sign up for your email list and when you want to convey a message you can directly send a message to each individual subscriber.

This will help you to make a strong relationship with your audience and you can grow much further.

This same applies to businesses as well where when you provide a lot of value to your customers, people will purchase from you more and even refer to other people because word of mouth is the strongest way of marketing.

Benefits of email marketing

1. High conversion

Email Marketing gives the highest return than any other marketing method because the conversions are really high. The reason is that emails are more personal and also known as direct marketing because here it is like you are directly communicating with a person.

Digital Advertisements don’t give that high returns compared to emails because today people are on their phones, laptops for a very long time throughout the day. They come across hundreds of ads every single day and they skip it and forget about it unless an ad is really catchy and to their interest.

When you send them an email about the same product, people look more closely at it because whenever people open their emails they read them very thoroughly. When someone opens their email they are usually in a working mood. So there are a lot of chances that a person is going to buy the product or at least enquire about it.

2. Brand Awareness

As I told above that through emails you reach out your message directly to individuals. This let people remember your brand name. Of course, it depends on how your email is and how much value you are providing.

But compared to social media, where one sees a thousand posts every day and when someone is using social media they are in a mood for entertainment and not interested in ads. So there is a high chance they won’t remember your brand unless your content is interesting.

But when they open their email, they are in a working mood and most people have a habit of reading all the emails very thoroughly.

How to get started with email marketing

To get started with email marketing you need 2 things:

  2. Email List

Email Marketing Software

Good email marketing software is really important because that is going to do all the work. There are a lot of email marketing softwares that are present in the market.

Email list

This is the main key to your business. Your email list is what defines you. This is a list that will contain all the details of your audience/customer.

Over time you need to grow your email list. Also, a higher number of subscribers in an email list doesn’t guarantee that you will get a lot of conversions. Remember quality is better than quantity.

You should have a good quality email list rather than an email list with a bunch of email addresses but no conversions.
