Automations are the reason why having an online business is so useful in 2021. Automation helps you to automate your work and save a lot of manual work and time.
If we look at automation in simple terms, it can be explained as having your all tasks done automatically by a machine.
When running an online business, setting up automation and making your business automated is very important. Having automation saves you a lot of time and money and provides a good experience to customers.
Automation usually happens when all of your online tools/software that you require for your online business work together. Some tools help in integrating your all online tools/software. The most popular tool is Zapier.
Today, we will look at how you can automate your emails while doing email marketing in Getresponse. For this, you won’t require a 3rd party software. Getresponse has its own automation platform.

How To Create Automation in Getresponse
First, go to your Getresponse dashboard and then click on the menu and then click on Automation.
Then you will see that what all you can do with the Getresponse automation. You can easily drag and drop and create your automation.
Click on Start your first workflow. A new workflow will be started.
Now you will get a lot of options on which type of automation do you want. Getresponse has already made many pre-designed automation templates for different categories.
In this tutorial, I am going to build one from scratch. But if you want to build from any one of the pre-build templates then you can do that. You need to click on the start now button to get started.
Give a name and below choose one block to get started. For reference pick the first one which says Subscribes. This basically means that when someone subscribes to your list, the automation will start from there.
Now, this is the dashboard where we are going to create our automation. There are a lot of things here so don’t get confused. I am going to tell you how you can create simple automation. On the right-hand side, you will find all the different automation blocks that you can use. In the middle, you will find the main area where you will design your automation and on the top, you have a tutorial option in case you get stuck and the save and publish button.

Now, let us talk about some of the elements that are present on the dashboard. There are three different types of automation:

Now let us discuss each one in detail. Conditions basically mean statements. They evaluate either true or false. If you have a little knowledge of programming then it would be very easy for you.
Suppose, I told the computer that if 2+2=4, then give output “correct” and if it is wrong then don’t give any output.
Actions like it sound you use it to take action. Whenever a condition is triggered you give an action block that the software will take. Like when a condition is triggered take this action.
Suppose if someone subscribes to your list, send them a welcome email. Here subscribing to the list is the condition and sending a welcome email is the action. I hope you are clear now.
Filters are basically blocks that are used to filter the results. It can be used to filter out contacts. This is a bit advanced function and not necessarily requires in most of the automation works.
A simple automation workflow
Now, let us look at a simple automation workflow and we will try to build that.
In this automated workflow, I have created an email sequence where when someone subscribes to my list they will receive an email and then the next day it will send another mail. Here I have a condition that if the person that has not opened the first mail will again receive the first mail the next and those who have opened it will receive the second email the next day.
First drag the subscribed via block and drag it to the middle. Then you need to select a list where you are going to store the information of the subscriber. To select a list refer to the image below.
Now go to Actions and then drag the Send Message block and then place it right under the previous block. Now, you need to write a message/email. If you already have a message then you can click on properties and select it or else you can create a new message. Refer to the image below.
Now after doing that, you need to connect two blocks in order for the automation to happen. To connect them you need to click on the dot which is present in the middle and connect it to the dot of the other block. Refer to the image below for reference.
Now put the other blocks according to your automation type and connect them. Now after completing everything, you need to select the save and publish button and it will be live.
